Project: 55 Shepherds Market, Mayfair
Client: I&N Site Servicing for Sir Robert McAlpine
Abacus Design was employed to design and detail extensive steel connections and secondary steelwork to a large and complicated structural refurbishment within the existing building.
We were also appointed to play the role of Temporary Works Engineer designing and detailing site works for new openings and removal of existing large chimney structures. The complexity of the project meant many detailed solutions needed to be schemed to enable practical implementation of the main consultant’s design.
Ed Park, Site Engineer for Sir Robert McAlpine:
“Abacus Design was the temporary works consultant for the steelwork contract on a technically complex Sir Robert McAlpine refurbishment project in Mayfair, London from April – October 2011. Throughout this time Paul and his team provided a professional and thorough service - technically capable and, critically, were willing and responsive to the ever-changing, dynamic requirements of temporary works design.
Due to the fragility and unpredictable nature of the existing structure, each design solution demanded multiple iterations and frequent (short-notice) site visits. Abacus were able to establish a relationship with the project design team, which helped to expedite approvals and fostered a positive team approach to tackling the considerable obstacles to project delivery. Essentially Paul’s designs reduced the number of sleepless nights many of us had about the stability of the structure”.
Extensive internal propping to facilitate new openings and removal and replacement of an existing heavily loaded steel column within basement area. This included detailed propping of existing listed stud walls with minimal disruption to existing staircase.
